How to organize eco-friendly holidays in Alonissos

10/06/2025

In a world that is changing rapidly due to the climate crisis, the way we travel can make a difference. Alonissos, with its natural wealth and ecological awareness, is an ideal destination for a vacation that respects the environment – without depriving yourself of any pleasure.

Here are practical and realistic suggestions for organizing eco-friendly vacations on the island.

1. Choose sustainable accommodation. Many guesthouses and small hotels in Alonissos follow environmentally friendly practices: use of solar energy, recycling, natural cleaning products and promotion of local products. Look for accommodations with an ecological philosophy – not only when booking, but also directly, as many small family hotels are not advertised on major platforms.

2. Prefer pollution-free transportation. Alonissos does not have huge distances. You can easily get around by:

Bicycle (ideal for the roads around Patitiri)

Hiking (there are dozens of trails with excellent signage)

Public bus (operates in the summer on main routes). If you need a vehicle, prefer a small, economical one.

3. Support the local economy. The "greenest" way to travel is to leave a positive footprint in the community. Buy from local grocery stores, prefer food in family taverns that use their own products and avoid mass tourist packages. Whatever you spend, make sure it stays on the island.

4. Leave no trace – literally. Always take a bag with you for your trash – even on remote beaches. Do not leave cigarette butts, plastic or packaging. If you see something abandoned, make a difference: pick it up. The island is small, and every little action counts.

5. Avoid plastic. Alonissos is one of the first Greek islands to try to reduce plastic. Bring with you:

Water bottle (most shops can fill it)

Reusable bags

Eco-friendly straws or cutlery and of course avoid single-use products.

6. Participate in activities or learn something new. The island is home to MOm, the Mediterranean Seal Institute. There you can learn about biodiversity, watch informative presentations or even volunteer. It's a great way to combine a trip with a purpose.

7. Respect nature and wildlife. Do not feed or disturb animals. Do not break corals or plants. If you go snorkeling, enjoy with your eyes, not your hands. When we protect the natural environment, we ensure that it remains alive for future generations of travelers.

Eco-friendly means conscious, not perfect. You don't have to be a "perfect traveler." Even small changes in the way you travel can make a difference. Alonissos is a destination that invites you to slow down, observe, and connect – with the place, the nature, and the people.
