How to organize eco-friendly holidays in Alonissos
In a world that is changing rapidly due to the climate crisis, the way of traveling can significantly reduce the environmental footprint. Alonissos, with its rich natural beauty, marine park and strong ecological awareness, is an ideal destination in Greece for sustainable vacations that respect the environment – without depriving any comfort or pleasure.
Below are practical and realistic tips for organizing eco-friendly holidays in Alonissos, combining relaxation with responsible, green travel.
1. Choose sustainable accommodation. Many guesthouses and small hotels in Alonissos apply environmentally friendly practices: use of solar energy, recycling, natural cleaning products and promotion of local, seasonal products. It is worth looking for accommodation with an ecological philosophy – not only through online booking platforms, but also directly, as many small family-run hotels are not advertised on major sites.
2. Prefer pollution-free or low-emission transportation. Alonissos is a relatively small island, with distances that can be covered easily and sustainably by:
Bicycle (ideal for the roads around Patitiri and nearby areas)
Hiking (there are dozens of marked trails with excellent signage for nature walks)
Public bus (operates in the summer on the main routes of the island). If a vehicle is necessary, it is better to choose a small, economical car with low fuel consumption.
3. Support the local economy. The most “green” way to travel is to leave a positive footprint in the local community. Prefer purchases from neighborhood grocery stores and traditional shops, choose food in family taverns that use their own or local products and avoid mass tourist packages that do not benefit the island. Whatever is spent during the holidays is important to remain on Alonissos.
4. Leave no trace – literally. It is useful to always have a small bag for trash – even on remote, secluded beaches. Cigarette butts, plastic, packaging and any kind of waste should never be left behind. If something abandoned is found, a simple move to pick it up can make a difference. The island is small, and every little action counts for the cleanliness of the environment.
5. Avoid plastic. Alonissos is one of the first Greek islands that systematically tries to reduce the use of plastic and protect the sea. Useful items to bring include:
Water bottle (most shops and cafés can refill it with drinking water)
Reusable bags
Eco-friendly straws or cutlery, and of course avoidance of single-use plastic products whenever possible.
6. Participate in activities or learn something new. The island hosts MOm, the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Monk Seal. There, visitors can learn about the unique biodiversity of the National Marine Park of Alonissos, attend informative presentations or even participate in volunteer actions. It is an excellent way to combine holidays with environmental awareness and meaningful experiences.
7. Respect nature and wildlife. Wild and domestic animals should not be fed or disturbed.
